CINNABAR NECKLACES Isn't the ore CINNABAR toxic? Indeed it is! The mercury in cinnabar is what caused hat makers more than a century ago to go mad (i.e. "mad hatter" as in Alice in Wonderland). Later, cinnabar was ground up, filtered to remove toxins, and used as a pigment in artist's oil paint called "burnt sienna". Today, when you see cinnabar beads, boxes or vases, etc. the only link to cinnabar is the color, as cinnabar is not used in the burnt sienna color any longer. The beads are actually carved of a lightweight WOOD, with a burnt sienna paint which is then lacquered. A photo of a cinnabar specimen is shown below, for your information:
