Hippos Create Their Own Antibiotic Sunscreen, "Sweat"

May 26, 2004 -- New research shows that the hippopotamus - famous for its luxurious mud-pack skin treatments in the hot sun - produces a sunscreen every time it sweats.  Wipe a hippo's face, and you get something akin to sweat, reports researcher Yoko Saikawa, a scientist with Keio University in Japan.  Sure, it's not produced by sweat glands like human sweat.  Nevertheless, it serves the same purpose.  Like sweat, it helps control a hippo's body temperature, explains Saikawa.

When the stuff is fresh, it is colorless like sweat. But in hippos, the mucus gradually turns red, then brown. In their study, Saikawa and his fellow researchers wiped a hippo's face and back -- then tested the red mucus in their laboratory. As they filtered the mucus, red and orange pigmented solutions emerged. "We named the red pigment 'hipposudoric acid' and the orange 'norhipposudoric acid,'" Saikawa writes. The study appears in this week's issue of Nature.

The pigments are in the ultraviolet range, indicating that they "may act as sunscreens," he explains. The red pigment also acts as an antibiotic, protecting the hippo's skin from infections, he explains. There's just one problem. Once they're off the hippo, these pigments become unstable and turn into solid, brown gunk within a few hours. What factor in the hippo's mucus keeps the stuff from changing form? That's yet to be discovered, says Saikawa.

Hippo sweat poses no immediate threat to the sunscreen industry -- at least not until the secret hippo ingredient is found.

KOALAS endure HEAT & WATER CRISIS (2009)

AT 120 DEGREES IN AUSTRALIA , IT WAS SO HOT FOR A WEEK THAT KOALAS WERE ASKING PEOPLE FOR WATER.  IT'S NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE.

(Email dated 11/17/09 from customers in Australia)

Hi Heidi and Glenn -
Here's something to cheer you up for your coming winter.  The date on the photos is January 2009, at the height of last summer's stinking heat wave. Yesterday was the first day of cooler temps for nearly 2 weeks - ugh - and now another 2 days of 105 F. Local news last week carried an item about a wild koala (remember, they're NOT bears) that scratched at a front door in the Adelaide suburbs and simply marched into the kitchen for a drink. It hasn't left the front porch and its water bowl since....amazing, in 40 years I've never heard of this before. You don't want to try to pick up a wild koala if you value your hide - those claws are sharp for tree climbing and they're strong little devils.

Your website is amazing - you never sit still! Is there anywhere you haven't been? We have a dream to do the Inside Passage trip one day, especially since we're in the middle of this stupid heat wave - and no rain for 3 weeks. We're in the driest state on the driest continent - humidity today is 5% - as soon as you finish hanging out a normal laundry load, the first bits are dry. Everybody lives around the edges, but the Outback has it's own beauty. Stunning colors. Hope you get a chance to visit - let us know.
Cheers
Louise and Peter

According to the above information on the koalas, the photographs are authentic and depict a real event. According to a February 5 article published in The Age, the baby koala, dubbed "Star" because of her rising Internet fame, wandered into a family home during a heatwave in the Australian state of Victoria. The article notes:
A family in Maude, near Geelong, photographed the young female koala taking a dip after finding her on their verandah, shaking and distressed.

Images of the dehydrated koala bathing in a bucket of water have circulated around Australia, New Zealand and Britain.

Tracey Young's 10-year-old nephew, Tom Durren, and his sister, Kate, 6, discovered the koala on Friday when temperatures reached the high 40s (C.).
Mrs. Young said that the koala climbed into the bucket of its own accord and stayed there for about twenty minutes. A wildlife carer who later took the koala to her property for ongoing care explained that the baby may have been abandoned by its mother because of the heatwave. She added that it is not unusual for koalas to "take a dip" during hot weather.

Victoria certainly did experience a very severe heatwave during January and February 2009 that resulted in power outages and transport delays. Tragically, the severe heat in Victoria, along with other adverse conditions, contributed to the Victoria Bushfire Disaster. Many people were killed and whole townships destroyed as the fires raged through rural communities in Victoria.

Wildlife was also severely affected by the fires with massive destruction of natural habitat and the death or injury of millions of animals. Another koala, dubbed "Sam" has also become quite famous after footage of her being give water out of bottle by a fire fighter was aired on TV news. Sam has rapidly become a symbol for hope amid the chaos caused by the disaster.
