SHARK and/or SKATE EGG CASE or CASINGS from Myrtle Beach
(Chondrichthyes)
An egg case or egg capsule, colloquially known as a mermaid's purse or devil's purse, is a casing that surrounds the fertilized eggs of some sharks, skates, and chimaeras. They are made of collagen protein strands. Because they are lightweight, they are commonly washed up by the sea, often found at the strandline, the farthest point of the high tide. The egg cases that wash up on beaches are usually empty, the young fish having already hatched out. This casing is from either the finback catsharks in the genus Proscyllium, dogfish, or a skate.
Average size 3" long x 1-1/4" wide x 1/2" thick.

WHAT IS THIS? A skin with a hole in the middle - what kind of critter would this be? Actually, if you fold this in half at the hole, you will see this is an entire shark skin. The hole is where the jaw went. Sample jaw shown here:

Here is Glenn cutting the skin down:

This is a rare acquisition of a complete SHARK SKIN including the denticles (the skin of shark is like tiny teeth that feel like sandpaper which is often buffed off in the tanning process, this skin is left natural). Pieces of shark skin such as this were often used before sand paper was invented. These come from the legal shark fishing industry, and are usually made into wallets, etc. The meat is sold to restaurants and all other parts of the shark are used.THE PARTS OF THIS SHARK SKIN ARE ALL SOLD, DISPLAY ONLY

PRICKLY SHARK SKIN
EXTREMELY RARE!!
The prickly shark (Echinorhinus cookei) is one of the two species of sharks in the family Echinorhinidae (the other one is the bramble shark), found in the Pacific Ocean over continental and insular shelves and slopes, and in submarine canyons. Bottom-dwelling in nature, it generally inhabits cool waters 100-650 m (330-2,130 ft) deep, but it also frequently enters shallower water in areas such as Monterey Bay off California. This stocky, dark-colored shark grows up to 4.0 m (13.1 ft) long, with two small dorsal fins positioned far back on its body and no anal fin. It is characterized by a dense covering of thorn-like dermal denticles, hence its common name.

Skin is thin and flexible. Some contain portions of the important LATERAL LINE sensory organ.

SHARK SKIN
(Unknown species)

Most shown front + back; texture like sandpaper, skin is stiff
Shark skin is made of a matrix of tiny, hard, tooth-like structures called dermal denticles or placoid scales. These structures are shaped like curved, grooved teeth and make the skin a very tough armor with a texture like sandpaper. They have the same structure as a tooth with an outer layer of enamel, dentine and a central pulp cavity. Unlike the scales of scales of bony fish (ctenoid scales) that get larger as the fish grows, placoid scales stay the same size. As the shark grows, it just grows more placoid scales.
These scales also help the shark swim more quickly because their streamlined shapes helps decrease the friction of the water flowing along the shark's body, by channeling it through grooves. Also, the shark's skin is so rough that contact with it can injure prey. All of the spines of the denticles point backwards (towards the tail), so it would feel relatively smooth it you moved your hand from head to tail (but rough the other way).
