LUCKY
PIG, ROLY
POLY, 3-legged
The creation of the Chanchitos pig
hails from the town of Pomaire, a Chilean town located west of
Santiago. The land of Pomaire is extremely fertile in natural clay and
has been noted for its lovely pottery creations handed down from
generation to generation using the same ancient techniques passed on
from their ancestors since the late 1600s. Apart from creating pottery
ware and ceramics, the town is also well noted for its inception of
the famous and rather cute three legged pig figurines known as
Chanchitos pig.
These little pigs are endowed
with the blessings of ushering good luck and goodwill to its
recipient. They appear to have been assimilated in the face of
this vibrant little town as a common good luck statue seen in shops
and restaurants which have also become closely acculturated into the
beliefs of the people of this town.
Tourists passing their way
through Pomaire looking for some giftware reminiscent of this lovely
town may find it very hard to fend off the look of the unusual and
adorable piggy figurine with the three legs and eventually these
little pigs become part of the merchandise and gifts purchased in this
town.
As each of these little pigs
weaves their way into our society, it is only natural that the idea
behind their existence is also upheld. After all, we all like good
luck charms to keep our lives secure, happy and filled with
luck every single day.

| GOLDEN
RAYS

Looking like giant leaves floating in the sea
thousands of Golden Rays are seen here gathering off the coast off Mexico.
The spectacular scene was captured as the magnificent creatures made one
of their bi-annual mass migrations to more agreeable waters.
Gliding silently beneath the waves they turned
vast areas of blue water to gold off the northern tip of the Yucatan
Peninsula. Sandra Critelli, an amateur photographer, stumbled across
the phenomenon while looking for whale sharks.
She said: "It was an unreal image, very
difficult to describe. The surface of the water was covered by warm and
different shades of gold and looked like a bed of autumn leaves gently
moved by the wind.
"It's hard to say exactly how many there were but in the range of a
few thousand.
"We were surrounded by them without
seeing the edge of the school and we could see many under the water
surface too. "I feel very fortunate I was there in the right
place at the right time to experienced nature at its best."
Measuring up to 7ft (2.1 meters) from wing-tip to wing-tip, Golden rays
are also more prosaically known as cow nose rays.
They have long, pointed pectoral fins that
separate into two lobes in front of their high-domed heads and give them a
cow-like appearance. Despite having poisonous stingers, they are
known to be shy and non-threatening when in large schools. The
population in the Gulf of Mexico migrates, in schools of as many as
10,000, clockwise from western Florida to theYucatan.
We are so honored that she has shared these
photos and story with the world. |

| KOALAS
endure HEAT & WATER CRISIS (2009)
AT 120 DEGREES IN AUSTRALIA , IT WAS SO HOT
FOR A WEEK THAT KOALAS WERE ASKING PEOPLE FOR WATER. IT'S NEVER BEEN
SEEN BEFORE.

ONE WENT TO A HOUSE TO TRY TO HIDE FROM THE
HEAT AND TO GET A BIT OF SHADE AND HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED WHEN
THE OWNER GAVE HIM SOMETHING TO DRINK.

(Email dated 11/17/09 from customers in
Australia)
Hi Heidi and Glenn -
Here's something to cheer you up for your coming winter. The date on
the photos is January 2009, at the height of last summer's stinking heat
wave. Yesterday was the first day of cooler temps for nearly 2 weeks - ugh
- and now another 2 days of 105 F. Local news last week carried an item
about a wild koala (remember, they're NOT bears) that scratched at a front
door in the Adelaide suburbs and simply marched into the kitchen for a
drink. It hasn't left the front porch and its water bowl since....amazing,
in 40 years I've never heard of this before. You don't want to try to pick
up a wild koala if you value your hide - those claws are sharp for tree
climbing and they're strong little devils.
Your website is amazing - you never sit still! Is there anywhere you
haven't been? We have a dream to do the Inside Passage trip one day,
especially since we're in the middle of this stupid heat wave - and no
rain for 3 weeks. We're in the driest state on the driest continent -
humidity today is 5% - as soon as you finish hanging out a normal laundry
load, the first bits are dry. Everybody lives around the edges, but the
Outback has it's own beauty. Stunning colors. Hope you get a chance to
visit - let us know.
Cheers
Louise and Peter
"Until one has loved an animal, part of
their soul remains unawakened."
|
| Louise
& Peter also shared these photos and comments, dated 11/17/09
"Jacaranda trees put out blossoms first
then leaves - the roads become purple carpets!"

|
According
to the above information on the koalas, the photographs are authentic and
depict a real event. According to a February 5 article published in The
Age, the baby koala, dubbed "Star" because of her rising
Internet fame, wandered into a family home during a heatwave in the
Australian state of Victoria. The article notes:
A family in Maude, near Geelong,
photographed the young female koala taking a dip after finding her on
their verandah, shaking and distressed.
Images of the dehydrated koala bathing in a bucket of water have
circulated around Australia, New Zealand and Britain.
Tracey Young's 10-year-old nephew, Tom Durren, and his sister, Kate, 6,
discovered the koala on Friday when temperatures reached the high 40s
(C.).
Mrs. Young said that the koala climbed into the
bucket of its own accord and stayed there for about twenty minutes. A
wildlife carer who later took the koala to her property for ongoing care
explained that the baby may have been abandoned by its mother because of
the heatwave. She added that it is not unusual for koalas to "take a
dip" during hot weather.
Victoria certainly did experience a very severe heatwave during January
and February 2009 that resulted in power outages and transport delays.
Tragically, the severe heat in Victoria, along with other adverse
conditions, contributed to the Victoria Bushfire Disaster. Many people
were killed and whole townships destroyed as the fires raged through rural
communities in Victoria.
Wildlife was also severely affected by the fires with massive destruction
of natural habitat and the death or injury of millions of animals. Another
koala, dubbed "Sam" has also become quite famous after footage
of her being give water out of bottle by a fire fighter was aired on TV
news. Sam has rapidly become a symbol for hope amid the chaos caused by
the disaster. |
