Large fossil whale vertebrae with man's face on one side, woman's

Barrow, Alaska; Tommy is the hottest artist in the community of 4800+
people. Very rarely are any of his carvings available, because they
are all pre-sold to the science community at the NARL Center.
However, our hotel was located across the street from his home, so we
commissioned this piece to be completed within 12 hours before our flight
left the next morning. At 7 a.m. we heard a noise outside our hotel
window, and there he was, putting the final touches on our piece.
Whoever buys this piece will get the rest of the real juicy story attached
to this piece. It will blow your mind. Measures 28-1/2" wide x 18" tall x 5-3/4"

KNIVES & LETTER OPENERS
BALEEN
BLADE
Hand made by Alaskan Native Aningayou
of Gambell, St. Lawrence Island
What is baleen? It is the strips that
hang down in the baleen whale's mouth like in a car wash that catch the
plankton that sticks to the hair along the strips of baleen, which it then
swallows. Baleen is made of Keratin (the same material our
FINGERNAILS are made of). Is that unusual enough of a knife for you?
Remember this is an Alaskan Native product
which means the whale is caught for subsistence purposes, and as much of
the whale is used as humanly possible, the rest is returned to the sea.
|
Made
of genuine FOSSIL (extinct) STELLAR SEA COW BONE (relative of the Manatee) (handle) and WHALE BALEEN (blade), average
7-1/4 to 8" long. Some handles are smooth, some are
ridged. For decorative or
display item, not recommended to be used as a letter opener. $55 each
unless otherwise marked For
decorative or display item, not recommended to be used as a letter opener.

SPIRIT MASK.
Measures 12-1/2" diameter x 1-1/2" thick.
Wall hanging.
Mask itself is carved of wood with a center section of Canadian
soapstone; two rings are wood. Kayak oar is whale baleen, harpoon is
whale baleen & string ; spirit animals around edges are a green/orange
Canadian soapstone; walrus tusks are baleen; feathers (Arctic spruce hen).
Signed Lenwood Saccheus, Elim AK "94"
This is a replica of the Eskimo ceremonial mask used in ceremonies
and dances. All dances & ceremonies were held in a central
building called "Gut".
The mask is the Spirit Center that calls all our animals to
us. We get the most and largest of animals.
The inner circle represents the Earth, the outer circle the
Heavens.
The paddle represents our transportation & the harpoon is used
to hunt some of the animals shown here - whale, walrus, seal,
fish.
One piece represents the seal flippers, these are delicacies which
were used and eaten by the elders, even in today's day and age. The
other flipper is whale, for elders - the easiest part to
chew.
One is a walrus stomach flotation with walrus hide line attached to
float from harpoon.
The feathers are used to decorate the masks. These feathers
were put in the seal breathing holes on the ice. When the feathers
move, this indicates that there is a seal emerging to surface, then is
when to plunge the harpoon for the seal catch.
Item comes with signed paper with descriptions from artist.
